  • Brooke Owens Fellow, Class of 2021

  • Cornell University, Mechanical Engineering, ‘21

  • Host Institution: Joby Aviation

  • Mentor: Zack Krevor

  • Brookie Mentor: Bekah Godwin

Shreya Gowda graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in December 2021. She is currently working at Joby Aviation as a Product Development Engineer. She was named one of Aviation Week Network's 20 Twenties for 2021, awarded the 2021 Women in Aerospace & Northrop Grumman Scholarship Award, is a mentee in the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs Space4Women Mentorship Program, and is a volunteer for the Space Foundation.

At Cornell, Shreya was Airframe lead for the engineering project team Cornell University Unmanned Air Systems (CUAir). Here, she collaborated in designing and manufacturing the airframe of the team’s autonomous, vertical take-off and landing, search and rescue aircraft with a focus in composites manufacturing. She is proud to have been the first female Airframe lead in the team's almost twenty-year history. In addition to CUAir, Shreya worked with Cornell’s Mechanics for Material Design Lab.

She received an Engineering Learning Initiatives Undergraduate Research Award for her research conducting finite element simulations of a composites manufacturing method to optimize the process for aerospace applications. Her other projects in the MMD lab include researching mechanically activated conductors for wearable electronics applications in collaboration with the Air Force Research Lab and developing a methodology for advanced composite bonding with Joby Aviation.

In her free time, Shreya loves to sew, learn new languages, and spend time outdoors with friends. As a Brooke Owens Fellow, she interned at Joby Aviation in the summer of 2021.
