Brooke Owens Fellow, Class of 2025
Georgia Institute of Technology, Biomedical Engineering, ‘26
Host Institution: Varda Space Industries
Mentor: TBD
Brookie Mentor: TBD
Sara is a junior at the Georgia Institute of Technology, studying Biomedical Engineering and minoring in Chemistry. They found their passion for aerospace after watching Carl Sagan’s Cosmos in middle school, and wanted to use biomedical engineering to support space exploration after taking a graduate bioastronautics class.
At Georgia Tech, Sara is an Undergraduate Research Ambassador, a mentor for the Women in Engineering program, and a member of the Honors Program. They have conducted research in developing cardiovascular monitoring devices and using high performance computing for microbiome analysis in Tech’s mechanical and environmental engineering departments. Sara is also an officer of the EPFL-based Asclepios analog mission's Medical Team. They are a proud alumnus of Stanford University's SURF program and the MIT Summer Research Program, where they worked on stabilizing pharmaceuticals and bacteria for delivery in chronic disease and harsh environments.
Sara is also active in Georgia Tech’s student-run theatre (DramaTech) where they have served as Production Manager and worked on sound design and engineering for numerous shows. They also enjoy playing jazz and classical piano, oboe, squash, and making hyperbolic crochet.
Sara is thrilled to be able to use their background in chemical delivery systems working at Varda as a product engineering intern this summer in El Segundo, CA!
